Elysian Essentials: 5 Favorite Subtle Scents

A scent can say a lot about someone, and finding the perfect scent can feel a lot like searching for a needle in a haystack. There’s just something about perfume that requires a perfect fit if you’re going to walk around in it everyday, leaving a trail in your wake.

Personally, I feel like it’s taken nearly two decades of experimentation to land on a scent that feels suitable for my style. It’s funny to think of a fragrance needing to be an extension of who we are, but in a lot of ways, smell can be a stronger sense than sight.

Growing up, I always identified perfume by being overly odiferous or grandmotherly, but recently the fragrance world has tapped into the market of more understated women, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. Not everyone can pull off Chanel No.5, or wants to smell like flowers, but that doesn’t mean perfume isn’t for you — it’s just a matter of finding the right scent.

Luckily a few boutique brands have emerged from the woodwork to introduce fragrances that are far more soft, subtle and sophisticated. Sandalwood and cardamom in lieu of jasmine and roses? Count me in. So in praise of keeping things simple, today I’m sharing my five favorite subtle scents that don’t require an occasion.

1. Vallée de Farney by Maison Louis Marie
2. Memoirs of a Trespasser by Imaginary Authors
3. Santalum by Fiele Fragrances
4. Olène by Diptyque Paris
5. Winter by Dasein
